Day 1: Chicago to Lacrosse, Wisconsin
(Driving day 1: 267 miles)
Kick-off your adventure on two wheels at Fox River H-D, St. Charles. We start our Sturgis adventure by riding 267 miles to Lacrosse, WI. We head north into Wisconsin on Hwy 64, staying clear of interstate & toll roads. When we reach Praire du Chen, we hit the Great River road, which we follow all the way to Lacrosse.
Day 2: Lacrosse to Chamberlaine, South Dakota
(Driving day 2: 432 miles)
Today is a “transport” leg to get us to all the fun in Sturgis quickly. We will spend the whole day on I-90 as we head west to Chamberlain, SD.
Day 3: Chamberlaine to Deadwood, South Dakota
(Driving day 3: 268 miles)
Today we start our fun adventures in the Black Hills, the location of the Sturgis Bike Rally (the mother of all bike rallies). Get ready for a lifetime experience!
We drive through the spectacular Badland National Park before we continue to Black Hills Harley Davidson, one of Sturgis Rally’s major locations. Thereafter, we head straight to Deadwood, which will be our home for the next five nights. We visit the “No 10 Saloon” where Wild Bill Hickok was shot when he played poker (The quick combination he had when he was shot is now called “Deadman’s Hand”). Deadwood is within an Indian reservation and has all gambling rights.
Day 4: Sturgis Bike Rally & Black Hills Run
(Driving day 4: 182 miles)
Today’s ride is a stand-out amongst Sturgis’s “must-dos”. We will ride the legendary Black Hills Run; full of spectacular scenery, magical views, and curvy twisty fun roads. Be ready for a lifetime experience for the history books.
We start our Black Hills ride by driving to Hill City, where we stop for coffee. We continue to Crazy Horse, the world’s largest monument carved in rock, before heading to Custer and Custer State Park, the area that captivated General George A. Custer because of its beautiful scenery and surroundings. We drive Needles Highway and Wildlife Loop, where we might encounter live buffalos. We eat lunch outside in Custer State Park, before driving the famous Iron Mountain Road. A truly unique experience! We continue to Mt Rushmore (the three presidents’ heads carved in the mountains).
After we have absorbed the Black Hills, we drive to Sturgis, a small town and the center of all activities around the Sturgis Bike Rally, America’s oldest and legendary Motorcycle Rally. We park the bikes and visit the world-famous Knuckle Saloon.
Day 5: Deadwood & Sturgis Rally
(Driving day 5: 167 miles)
On today’s ride, we make enough time to take some great photos and enjoy the scenery at each location.
We start this day off by taking the great opportunity to visit the Historic town of Hulett, which normally offers a great escape from the chaos surrounding the Sturgis area. The town hosts the annual Ham’n Jam, allowing visiting bikers to scarp up roast pork sandwiches for free. Thereafter, we visit our Nation’s first National Monument; Devils Tower, which in retrospect is a pleasantly quiet, volcanic formation, that rises 1.267 feet above the surrounding terrain. A 1.3-mile paved trail encircles the tower allowing visitors to gawk at climbers ascending its features. The park also holds a prairie dog town. A little fun fact; Devil’s Tower was the location of the sci-fi movie “Encounters of the 3rd degree”.
We will also check out the famous burn-out contest at Sundance (Sundance was the hometown of the Sundance Kid). Thereafter, we drive through the beautiful Spearfish Canyon; natural surroundings as in a painting that only nature can create before we are back in Deadwood.
Day 6: Deadwood & Sturgis Rally
(Sturgis Motorcycle Rally)
We visit downtown Sturgis to enjoy some of the fun biker atmospheres the legendary Sturgis Rally is known for. Thereafter, we drive to the legendary Full Throttle Saloon before returning to the fun Buffalo Chip campground. Use the rest of the day as you wish. Attend all fun, hustle, and bustle of the “mother” of all biker rallies. Enjoy!
Day 7: Deadwood & Sturgis Rally
(Sturgis Motorcycle Rally)
Another day at the fun Sturgis Rally. Use the day as you wish.
Day 8: Deadwood to Fairmont, Minnesota
(Driving day 4: 496 miles)
We begin our journey home. We will be riding hard, covering almost 500 miles as we head home. We will be stopping right over the Minnesota border in Fairmont, where we will spend the evening together.
Day 9: Fairmont - Chicago, Illinois
(Driving day 5: 422 miles)
The tour ends with our last leg towards Chicago.
